What it is

DriveTrain is a study app for the Russian driving-theory exam. It carries 800 questions arranged as 40 papers of 20 — the ticket structure Russian theory practice is built around — and each question exists twice: the text, all 2,504 answer options, and a written explanation, in both Russian and English. 548 of the questions include a photograph or diagram of a road situation. Everything installs with the app and works with no connection.

The problem it solves

Russian driving theory is taught in Russian, including its legal vocabulary, and the explanations cite paragraph numbers from the traffic regulations. That leaves a learner with two poor options: study in Russian and understand less than they think, or study a translation and arrive at the exam having never seen the phrasing they will be marked on.

Translating the app does not fix this. Translating the interface leaves the questions in Russian; translating the questions loses the terminology. DriveTrain keeps both versions of the same question and lets the learner move between them mid-question, with answers already given preserved.

The decisions behind it

• Both languages live in the same question record. Switching is a field swap, not a fetch, which is why it is instant and why it works offline and in every mode, including the timed exam.
• Every explanation is bilingual. All 800, in each language. An explanation a learner cannot read teaches nothing.
• Answer options are translated one by one. Theory questions are decided by the differences between options, so translating only the question stem would have been cosmetic.
• A question counts as known only if you got it right last time. A lucky guess that a later attempt contradicts stops counting, which makes the completion figure worth reading.
• The mistake list maintains itself. Wrong answers collect automatically and drop out once answered correctly. It is the most useful revision list in the app, and the learner never has to build it.
• The claims stay inside what the app can support. The timed exam is presented as DriveTrain’s own practice, not as a reproduction of the official test, and the app claims no affiliation and no exam outcomes.

How it is built

The Android app is Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with a local relational database for questions, attempts, sessions, bookmarks, and exam results. The question bank ships as a bundled data file and loads on first run, so there is no content server and no account anywhere in the product.

Shipping on both stores meant settling the name in public: the App Store listing reads “Drive-Train” and everything else — the app, Google Play, this site, the product site — reads “DriveTrain”. Both spellings appear here once, so a search for either finds the same product.

Where to get it

On the App Store, listed there as “Drive-Train”, for iPhone, iPad, Mac with an M1 chip or later, and Apple Vision, requiring iOS 16 or later.
